Pool Side Landscaping Ideas

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

When you are looking for pool side plants that will stand up to your backyard environment you should consider the amount of light and heat they will be exposed to. Also consider that they should be hearty enough to take being splashed with chlorinated water. Plants that shed or attract a lot of insects are also a bad idea.

A good group of to consider is tropical plants. Tropical plants and palms are naturally used to lots of direct sunlight and heat. While many people think palms will only grow in tropical regions, there are several varieties that will grow in cooler backyards. Windmill palms, Mediterranean Fan palms, Pindo palms, and California Fan palms will all survive in regions that drop to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Palms can add a great effect day or night to a pool area. Spruce up their effect with underwater swimming pool lights and landscaping lights to highlight the trees after dark.

Cannas and Elephant ears are also great options. Cannas come in many different colors and add a vertical accent to the pool landscaping. Elephant ears grow quickly and are a common favorite, however, their bulbs need to be replanted each year.

Another great option is to utilize containers. Container plants can be rearranged as needed to change the look of the landscaping or to hide pool equipment. They can also be moved into a basement or garage when cold weather comes to preserve plants that may not withstand the frigid winter temperatures.

If tropical plants aren’t quite your style, then ornamental grasses are another great poolside option. These grasses are extremely low maintenance, very tidy, and their arching, swaying motion is extremely attractive and relaxing. There are many sizes and types to choose from, as well. Unless you have a huge backyard, stay away from the larger clumps, like traditional pampas grass. Zebra and Maiden grasses will remain a more manageable size.

These are just a few ideas for your backyard pool area. There are many different options for you to consider. Regardless of your tastes, you should remember that you will spend a lot of time out by your pool surveying your landscape as you lounge by the pool so make sure the landscape you decide on is one that you like!

The Characteristics of the Gate Arbor

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Do not confuse a gate arbor with an arbor gate. The term “pergola” is often used in reference to any structure that resembles one of the arbor gates. In contrast, an arbor and gate is used to transform a plant support into a passageway.

Gate arbors can be made from a variety of materials. A metal arbor with gate can be fashioned from brushed bronze, wrought iron or tubular steel. In the past, metal and wood were the two materials used in any sort of arbor with gate. Today, however, a growing number of homeowners have chosen to use one of the vinyl arbors and gates.

The style of this garden piece is defined by the nature of the arbor, the element that allows a plant to cover a gated passageway. Some styles have a flat top arbor, while others have one that curves downward in the center. The latter style represents the defining characteristic of the aqueduct pergola.

Whether made of red cedar, pine lumber, metal or vinyl, this garden piece generally serves to welcome a visitor into some section of a carefully planted backyard. Depending on the type of plant that twines around the arbor, the garden arbor plus gate can be either a multicolored object, or a study in the shades of green. The scene that greets the person who walks through this special passageway depends on the nature of the plants and decorations in the backyard garden.

That scene could be a beautiful fountain, a pond, a birdbath, a gazebo or possibly even a small orchard. That field of fruit trees could well be discovered by someone who has passed through one of the gates in a Persian garden. That plant covered space often contains orange, lemon, cherry or pomegranate trees. Sometimes it also has walnut
